Fair Trade and Commitment for Life
At the Quarterly Church Meeting held on Tuesday 16th November 2004, Christ Church formally signed up to "Commitment for Life". This means we will be asking members of the congregation to give regular financial support to poor countries and encouraging the purchase of Fair Trade products. Scheme scheduled to start in January 2005. Watch this website for updates.

What is "Fair Trade"?

When we buy food or other goods grown or manufactured in the poorest regions of the world, we are "doing our bit to help", aren't we?
Well, not really, unless they, as producers, receive a FAIR proportion of what we pay for such goods. Which is where Fair Trade comes in.
From the
Fairtrade Website we can find a more detailed answer to the above question...

"Fairtrade does what it says on the label; it guarantees a better deal to producers in the developing world.
This means a stable price which covers their production costs, along with a premium that their organisation will be able to reinvest either in the business or social and environmental schemes among the wider community.
Too many farmers in the developing world have to contend with fluctuating prices that may not even cover what it costs to produce their crop.
So Fairtrade can make a big impact on their day-to-day life. And on their future and that of their family."
The Fairtrade symbol, shown alongside, is celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2004.
So do visit the website to find out how many ways YOU can help.
