CHESTER DIOCESAN GUILD OF CHURCH BELL RINGERS
WIRRAL BRANCH

2007 STRIKING COMPETITION
SHOTWICK
Saturday 26th May: Draw 6:00 pm
Judge: Mark Humphreys (Senior Steward, College Youths)

This year the Striking competition took place in the beautiful setting of Shotwick. It was good to see that the event was well supported, with six tower bands contesting for the Alex Martin Trophy plus Ladies and Gents bands. As the judge remarked it was a very enjoyable ‘English’ evening with sunshine, the sounds of bellringing, birdsong - and even lawn mowers!
The judge was Mark Humphreys who will take his place this November as Master of the College Youths.
It was good to see that bands were entered from more Wirral Towers than in the recent past. Some people ring in more than one team which perhaps reflects the changing way we ring and the fact that many of us are Sunday service ringers in two or even three towers. We also saw many new faces, special mention must go to the first Shotwick band and also to the Oxton band which contained people who are only just beginning their ringing career. Both these bands earned the judges’ commendations for their performance.
The Alex Martin Shield was won by Port Sunlight who have the honour of representing the Branch at the Guild Six bell Competition in July. The judge commented on the good shape and structure of their ringing. The overall winner of the competition was the Gents who rang a touch of Cambridge which the judge described as ‘excellent with no consistent faults’
