There has been a church at Burton since at least Norman times and by 1549-1550 it possessed two bells. By 1620 these had been augmented to a ring of three. In 1720 the fabric of the church was found to be in such poor condition that the upper part of the steeple was taken down and the bells removed for safety. The following year some extensive rebuilding took place and most of the present church, including the tower, dates from this time. In 1724 the parish obtained a ring of five bells from Abraham Rudhall of Gloucester and these bells, together with a new treble cast by Taylors in 1896, make up the present ring of six. Footnote: Earlier versions of A Bellringer's Guide to the Church Bells of Britain by R.H Dove, the 2001 Annual Report of the Chester Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and, until now, this web site, all have the note of the tenor as A#. However, the current (ninth) edition, now entitled Dove's Guide for Church Bell Ringers, records this as Bb which seems a more appropriate description. |
