| The installation of this bell, to mark the Centenary of the opening of Church Drive Primary School, commenced on 28th February 2003. The bell was originally located at the Gatehouse of the nearby factory of 'Lever Brothers Ltd' as it was titled at the time the bell would have been used there. It was acquired by School Governor, Gavin Hunter who wished to see it installed in the vacant bell tower above the school during its centenary year. He was advised that a Mr Tommy Morgan, a retired engineer and bellringer at St Saviour's, Oxton, and who has carried out a number of bell maintenance projects across Wirral, might prove a useful contact. It is understood that, when in use at the factory, the bell was sounded by the use of 'flails'. There is a clear 'flat-spot' on the soundbow indicating where the bell was struck. Not unsurprisingly, the contact point is some 30mm below where it should have been (the thickest part of the soundbow) so it is unlikely that the full tonal range of the bell would have been heard. Although there is nothing on the bell itself to give a date of manufacture (the only markings being the sets of 'moulding wires' - 3 above shoulder, 4 at shoulder, 3 above soundbow and 2 below), it is probable that it would have been made some time between the opening of the building housing the gatehouse (1893) and the following decade or so. Conseqeuntly, it is a near contemporary of the school so entirely appropriate to mark its centenary. The bell, however, was incomplete, having no fittings at all. Consequently, Gage Engineering came to their assistance and manufactured a headstock in solid stainless steel. Tommy then attached the headstock to the bell and made brackets fitted with self-aligning bearings to support the bell. With the assistance of Gavin Hunter and Wirral Branch Secretary, Peter Humphreys, Tommy then installed the bell in the newly renovated bell tower, still surrounded by scaffolding which made the task of raising the bell a little easier. (see Picture Gallery). Once the scaffolding has been removed, work will commence to ensure a suitable routing for the bell rope. The bell will then be capable of being 'swing-chimed' from inside the school at the foot of the tower. |
