PORT SUNLIGHT'S 8-BELL SIMULATOR

Last updated 1 December 2003

The first Simulator ever to be installed in the Wirral Branch is to be found at Port Sunlight.

Installation was completed in November 03 prior to a Central Council run Listening Skills Course to be held in December.

It is an 8-Bell Simulator and is run from a PC running AbelSim software.

Ringers, from local towers especially, are welcome to try this new facility but do please contact the Tower Captain well in advance of your proposed visit for such a purpose.

For those interested in the hardware, the picture (below left) shows the Multi-Bell Interface secured to the bell frame. There are leads to eight photocells, each located adjacent to its bell wheel. The picture to the right shows the photocell at bell number 2. A reflective strip is attached immediately facing each photocell when the bell is at bottom dead centre. The ninth lead (uppermost) links with the PC in the Ringing Chamber.

In addition, it will be necessary to 'silence' the bell(s) in some way such as illustrated below.

The picture below shows the PC in the Ringing Chamber running AbelSim. The screen depicts six bell ropes but any number from 3 to 16 may be selected, irrespective of the number of real bells in the tower.

If you are considering such an installation in your tower, do please contact the Tower Captain (see above). He can advise on costs of the necessary hardware and Software and the process of installation.
